Charles Matt Witt, age 89, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the family residence. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Benton and local business owner for over 60 years. He was very active in the community throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his father, John Witt; step-father and mother, Herman and Lou Biggs Witt Wright; sister, Helen Witt Longwith. He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth Richardson Witt; children, Mike Witt, Debbie Brannon both of Benton, TN, Jim Richardson of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Tyler Brannon, Tanner Brannon, Michael Witt, Natalie Wilkinson; great-grandchildren, Kiersten, Matt, and Mavis Witt; brother, John (Irene K.) Witt and sister, Carolyn (John) Guerry both of Chattanooga. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was past president of the Benton Lions Club and very active member for over 50 years, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, past president of former People’s Bank, on the board of Polk County Educational Foundation, a member of Ocoee Lodge 212; and Scottish Rite KCCH, 32nd degree. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2016 in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Reverend Charles Cheatham officiating. Interment will follow in Benton Memorial Gardens with Tyler Brannon, Tanner Brannon, Michael Witt, Jim Richardson, Bill Witt and Jerry Stephens serving as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Higgins Funeral Home.
