Margie Gilliland

June 21, 1913 — January 24, 2014

Margie Gilliland, age 100, a former resident of Benton, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 in a local healthcare facility. She was a member of Benton United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She also was a member of Polk County Retired Teachers Association, Polk County Historical and Genealogical Society, and avidly supported Friends of the Library in Benton and the Lady Vols. She was preceded in death by her parents, Squire Bill and Laura Christian Gilliland; her brothers, Foy and Broughton Gilliland; and sisters, Eva Lee Bates and Ovean Scarbrough. She is survived by a brother, Chet Gilliland of Etowah; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home in Benton conducted by Reverend Betsy Switzer. Interment will follow at Benton Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
