Arnold Edward Smith, 88, of Polk County, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010 in an Etowah hospital. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from the construction business and the Polk County Board of Education. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Reliance Masonic Lodge. He was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Cambria Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hayes Smith and parents, Joseph and Oma Jane Chambers Smith. He is survived by his sons, Chris Smith and wife, Amanda and Ronnie Smith and wife, Phyllis, all of Benton and James Smith and wife, Valerie of Ocoee; daughters, Debbie Passmore and husband, Alan of Maryville, Shannon Wilcox and husband, Johnny of Benton, and Sandy Allen of Clinton; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sister, Delzie Blair of Etowah; Leroy Smith of Reliance; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Reverend Homer Belcher and the Reverend Joel Jenkins officiating. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Cambria Church Cemetery with Samuel Smith, Caleb Norwood, Joshua Norwood, Jacob Passmore, Terry Blair and Rick Smith serving as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
