Virgil I. Calhoun, Sr., age 89, a life long resident of Benton, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2006 at his daughter's residence. He was a member of the Benton Fellowship. He was a United States veteran of World War II and was deployed overseas twice. He was past mayor of Benton. Mr. Calhoun was the son of the late William and Pallie Maddoux Calhoun and was also preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his children and spouses: Billy and Janice Calhoun of Benton, Barbara and Wilbur Bishop, Jr., Joyce and Floyd Earwood and Jennie and Charles Dixon and Pat and Larry Goins all of Cleveland, Virgil Calhoun, Jr. and Francis Calhoun of Benton, Jackie and Donna Calhoun of Benton, special daughter, Joyce Stafford and husband, Dennis Stafford of Benton and David Arrowood of Cleveland; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with Reverend A.C. Cooper, Jr. officiating. Interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Benton Memorial Gardens with military honors.
His family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the service.
