Hughie Edward “Ed” Lea, 98, of Benton, departed this life peacefully on August 17, 2024, at a local healthcare facility.
He was born on August 10, 1926, in Ocoee, TN, to the late Leach Lea Sr., and Sarah Wright Lea.
Ed graduated as valedictorian in the Class of 1944 from Polk County High School. He served our country with the U.S. Navy and later retired from L&N/CSX after 45 years, starting out as a telegrapher and ending up as a computer operator. He was the last Station Agent at multiple stations, including the Historic Etowah L&N Depot.
A few of his fondest memories included eating at Ruby’s Diner, classic car shows, working “word search” games, piddling with his lawn mowers and watching Gunsmoke on Pluto.
In addition to his parents, Leach and Sarah Lea Sr., he was preceded in death by his four brothers, Leach Lea Jr., Rev. Lester Lea, Fletcher Lea, and Evan Lea; two sisters, Anna Mae Ross, and Ruth Day.
Left to cherish the many memories include his loving wife of 74 years, Glenda Tinsley Lea; beloved son, Philip Lea and many loving friends and relatives.
A Celebration of Life graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Lee Cemetery.
Family and friends will gather from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Higgins Funeral Home of Benton.
